Useful Pots: Design Decisions

Useful Pots: Design Decisions

~With Ellen Shankin

Event Type: Workshop

Tuition: $225

Level: Intermediate

Useful pots made on a wheel serve a specific purpose.Their form,
however, contains a world of possibilities. It has been my particular
passion to take the thrown pot beyond the wheel, out of round,
while holding fast to the restrictions that usefulness imposes. In this
workshop I will encourage the exploration of those techniques and
ideas: from simple immediate manipulation of the wet pot as it leaves
the wheel, to the more forced imposition of form on leather hard
clay.... a variety of approaches will be demonstrated .
Information will be shared and progress made through slide
presentation, one on one attention, a lot of throwing and group
discussion. While throwing we make choices about our work, often
unaware.....the rim thick or thin....throwing lines visible or removed ....
These decisions, whether made consciously or not, radically affect
the overall presence and resolution of the piece.
Conversations about design decisions will encircle every
demonstration and effort in the studio.
I want students to come away from this experience jazzed up about
the altered pot, with the skills to continue that investigation when they
leave. And to have developed a richer vocabulary of self-expression
as it manifests itself in the simple pot.

This 3-day workshop will be also include open studio time with Ellen as mentor the following week, Tuesday-Friday 2/28- 3/2.

Artist Talk & Aloha Potluck

Artist Talk & Aloha Potluck

~With Holly Roberts

Event Type: Presentation

Cost: Free!

Holly Roberts' first national exposure came in 1989 with the publication of the monograph, Holly Roberts, from the Untitled Series published by the Friends of Photography. Although her work has always been based on the photograph, it was the inclusion of paint that made it so distinct. As David Featherstone says in his introduction, "Roberts is a painter, yet it is the photograph underlying the paint, even when it can scarcely be seen, that gives the work its intriguing, mysterious power. Drawing from the iconography of primitive art, particularly that of the Native American, Mexican and Hispanic cultures of the Southwest, where she lives, she creates paintings that address a broad range of human emotions…. While it is Roberts' evolving interaction with the photograph that takes her to her finished work, it is the existence of the underlying photographic image—even when it is obscured by paint—that gives the work its powerful qualities and sets up the emotional challenge for the viewer."

Her work has continued to evolve, but she has reversed her original process of heavily over painting the black and white silver print. She now works on top of a painted surface, developing a narrative scene with collaged photographic elements. Where earlier pieces reflected psychological or emotional undercurrents, newer works make use of familiar or iconic stories to address tougher questions about man’s effect on the land and the animals that inhabit it.

In 1990, Nazraeli Press published Holly Roberts: Works 1989-1999, and in 2009 Holly Roberts: Works 2000-2009. A dedicated teacher as well as a prolific artist, she has had a profound effect on a community of artists around the country. She continues to live in the Southwest.

Pochoir

Pochoir

~With Elizabeth Ferrill

Event Type: Workshop

Tuition: $225

Level: Open to All Levels

The pochoir printmaking method is a simple and beautiful way to layer forms, create pattern, and build a remarkable matte surface using water-soluble gouache. The tradition of pochoir will be explored as a way to create unique yet reproducible images and to hand color prints and drawings with saturated, velvety, flat blocks of color. Students will experiment with ways to apply gouache to make both transparent and opaque effects, practice fading and blending, and stenciling onto alternative surfaces.

A native of Seattle, WA, Elizabeth received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She received her MFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.

Elizabeth has had solo exhibitions at the Armory Gallery at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, at the Gideon Gartner Gallery at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO and at 5x6x9 Gallery in Berlin, Germany. Alternative Firing Techniques

Alternative Firing Techniques

~With Kate & Will Jacobson

Event Type: Presentation

Cost: $300

Kate and Will Jacobson have been collaborative studio potters since 1978 and are widely recognized as the inventors of naked raku.

This workshop will be a thorough exploration of this and other alternative firing techniques. The first two mornings will be spent demonstrating sculptural and throwing methods. Students will have open access to the Donkey Mill ceramics studio in the afternoons and evenings. The third day student work will be bisque fired. An excursion on Hawaii island will be planned during the bisque. On the fourth and fifth days participants will experiment with glazing and various low-fire smoke and sagger techniques.

"Our approach to making art is much more intuitive than pragmatic. When working, we allow the fate of the clay to reveal itself and then we embrace the experience. It's almost an involuntary response where we are simultaneously the guide and the seeker."
