Starting February 2012
Every Tuesday Night with our guests Nicky, Jessie, and Pete
6 - 10pm
Donkey Mill Art Center
FREE!
Hello all,
We are trying a new experiment. With so much to do during the day, we are left with only a few evening hours to try and find time to reignite our creative side. And there is something to be said for the sense of peace the dusk hours can bring. Sometimes we are unable to fully commit to an art class that has a fixed time of when to arrive and when to leave. Let alone, many of us simply don't know what arena of art we would like to grow. With that said, we are going to open the top floor of the Donkey Mill to be utilized as an open medium studio.
Bring you paints and paint a picture. Bring your thread and your needle to sew a blanket for your bed. Bring your carving tools and a block of wood to carve what ever comes to mind. Bring your pencil and some paper to write music and or lyrics. Bring some bottle caps, glue, resin, and magnets to make refrigerator magnets. Bring anything you like, and create anything you want. I, Nicky, Jessie, and Peter will be in the top studio from 6-10 every Tuesday evening. And we will remain there no matter how many people do or don't show up. We have no expectation as to what this may or may not become. We are not acting as teachers, simply as undefined artist peers. There is no deadline of a project, nor is there any coaching given....though all are welcome to aid each other, and share a skill if you feel so inclined. There is no wrong type of art, as it is subject to the creator. Sometimes it just simply nice to be surrounded by what it is that inspires you, even if words are never exchanged, though that is open too. It is similar to being in a library, and even though you couldn't possibly read all that information in one sitting (unless you are an android with a super computer brain, in which case the Donkey Mill is still open to you as well), but the mere presence of knowledge fills you with inspiration. We will have music playing from the stereo in hopes to help coax the ol' imagination.
Show up when ever you like, and leave whenever you like. The point is to create a place where you can unwind, relax, and create, with no expectations or deadlines. Who knows what this may become. Like I stated, it is an experiment. With that said, we may find that different art classes, as well as the existing classes, are needed in this community. Or maybe it simply remains a place to be absolutely free in your chosen art expression....call it a modern day art speak easy if you will. And although we fully embrase all children, we ask that you leave your children at home, to create a more personal and creative art experience. If we see you here or not, remember this....art is in all we do and the way we live. Enjoy the ride my friends.

Talk Story Tellers and Ohana Style Potluck
The Donkey Mill Art Center is proud to present the Talk Story Tellers and Ohana Style Potluck on Sunday, October 16 from 4-7pm. Four storytellers will enchant the audience with modern fairy tales, morality tales, peace stories, historical characterizations and personal tall tales. According to Eric Wolf, from Ohio, Winner of a 2010 National Oracle Award from the National Storytelling Network, "These stories all have one common theme to them - they teach children to have a magical, mystical and imaginative world view."
Other featured artists include Jo Radner from Maine, the wise elder of American storytelling, Jeff Gere, founder of the Oahu Talk Story Festival and Shain Miller, unique twenty-something proprietor of Chinatown's One King Art Center in Honolulu. These artists are participating in the 23rd Annual Talk Story Festival sponsored by the Honolulu Parks Department. The Donkey Mill Art Center is co-hosting the Hawaii Island tour along with East Hawaii Cultural Center (Friday, October 14, 7pm) and Volcano Art Center (Saturday, Oct 15, 7pm). Come lend an ear to see what they’ll say.
Admission for the Talk Story Festival is $12 per family and contribution to the ohana style potluck is appreciated.
