WAUKE PROJECT: "Pepa a Hawai'i" (Paper of Hawaii) September 11 to December 11 (Tuesdays)
Students will work in an independent study atmosphere under the guidance/mentorship of Gerald Lucena who has worked with Marilyn Wold, fiber artist. This is a work study program where students will learn all about Wauke and other native plants for papermaking; from planting, caring for, harvesting, cooking, and preparation to make quality Pepa a Hawai'i (paper of Hawai'i). This will be an entrepreneurial experience for our youth. They will also work with artists who will help them to expand their understanding in making art with and on paper. Through this program, the students will develop good working habits, responsibility, confidence, and independence to collaborate and cooperate with others as they coordinate activities and manage the program in a businesslike manner. |
THE "HOW TO" OF ART MAKING September 12 to December 12 (Wednesdays)
Students will explore various art processes and media, both 2 and 3 dimensional. Media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and mixed media will be introduced. However, the emphasis will always be on the process, not the product. Artist instructors will also integrate concepts from "An Essential Arts Tool Kit”" which includes observing, patterning and performing. |
INDEPENDENT STUDY September 13 to December 13 (Thursdays)
This course is designed for students wanting to further their knowledge in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Set up as a mentorship program, students will work with established artists from the community on projects that will deepen their technical skills. Although marked as a studio class, students will be exposed to art history through informal presentations relating to the student's work and the type of work she/he is interested in. After establishing a strong foundation in drawing and painting, students will have an opportunity to work on a collaborative project such as a public mural. |

"HOW TO..." IN ART MAKING
Children who have never had the opportunity to express themselves through art will discover new ways of communicating their thoughts and ideas. Children involved in previous after-school or in-school programs and/or Summer Art Experiences will have an opportunity to continue their exploration of the art making process in drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramics at an intermediate level. Each instructor will present and create projects that will challenge and support your child's area of interest. Students will explore various art processes and media, both 2 and 3- dimensional. Media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and mixed media will be introduced. However, the emphasis will always be on the process, not the product. Artist instructors will also integrate concepts from "An Essential Arts Tool Kit" which includes observing, patterning and performing. |
