The Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture is pleased to offer Art Education for Children and Youth; these courses designed to help children and youth use art as a tool for: discovering one's self and finding meaning in life, understanding relationships with others, solving problems using critical thinking skills.
We believe that through experiences in art making, children will develop their self-concept and become motivated individuals who understand the importance of planning and working for a positive future for themselves and their communities.
Creative Outlet is a 12 week after-school program that explores a full array of artistic disciplines to stimulate, develop and engage the imagination of young artists. Children explore meaningful ideas and processes that lead toward authentic work in a variety of media such as clay, collage, printmaking,
painting and drawing. Towards the end of the semester, students work on their communication skills by engaging in collaborative projects. Class size is limited, offering each child plenty of individual attention.
Children involved in previous after-school or in-school programs will have an opportunity to continue a higher level of exploration in art making as instructors create specific projects that challenge and support your child's area of interest.
ART PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
_Basics: students will learn about line, color, texture, shapes and patterns.
_Papermaking: students will learn how to make paper using recycled materials and the local wauke plant. Students will paint on their paper using basic skills.
_I Dig Dirt: students will have the opportunity to plant flowers and vegetables in our community garden while learning about sustainability, composting and recycling.
_Naturally Fabulous: Mother Nature is the best artist we will ever know. The class will begin by looking at works by internationally renowned environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy. Then students will create their own installations outside, using leaves, sticks and rocks. Students will title and record their
installation using natural inks.
_Dragon Magic: If you had a dragon for a pet, what would it look like, what would it do for you and your friends? Examine texture, bones, teeth, fire, wings horns and even roars and imagine your own dragon. Listen to a few stories of dragons from around the world to spark your imagination. Then create
your own magical dragon out of papier-mache.
_Army of Super Heroes: ceramic mania inspired by the Terracotta Army discovered in 1974 within the tomb of China's first emperor, Qinshi Huang.
AGES 13-17
